More to Son Bou than meets the eye
Most visitors arriving at Son Bou for the first time do not realise that at the western end of the beach, half buried in the sand, are the remains of a 5th century early Christian basilica. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Menorca and you can walk to it directly from the shore. It sets the tone for what this part of the island is all about — layers of history sitting alongside some genuinely stunning natural scenery.
From Son Bou by car you are perfectly placed to reach both Cala en Porter to the east, with its dramatic clifftop setting and the famous Cova d'en Xoroi cave bar, and the quieter beach at Sant Tomas to the west, which tends to be noticeably calmer even in peak summer. Head inland for ten minutes and you reach Alaior, the town that produces Menorca's celebrated artisan cheese and some of the best ice cream on the island.

Early Christian Basilica
Right at the western end of Son Bou beach, the remains of a 5th century basilica sit half buried in the dunes. Free to visit and fascinating for all ages.
Alaior
Ten minutes by car into the centre of the island. Stock up on genuine Menorcan cheese, try the local ice cream and browse the market. A great morning out away from the beach.
Cala en Porter
Fifteen minutes east along the south coast. One of Menorca's most dramatic coves with towering cliffs and the world famous Cova d'en Xoroi cave bar carved into the rock face.
Sant Tomas
Ten minutes west. A quieter beach than Son Bou with natural dunes and access to some of the more sheltered coves on this stretch of the south coast.
Monte Toro
Twenty minutes to the highest point in Menorca. On a clear day you can see the entire island from coast to coast. A brilliant excursion with children and well worth the short drive.
