There are moments when you turn a corner in Menorca and the view just stops you completely. Cala en Porter is one of those moments. The cove sits at the bottom of cliffs that rise nearly forty metres straight out of the sea, with a cluster of whitewashed houses clinging to the rock above and water below that shifts between turquoise and emerald green depending on the light. It is genuinely one of the most dramatic settings of any beach resort in the Mediterranean and it tends to leave a lasting impression on anyone who visits.
The flipside of being somewhere so spectacularly isolated is that Cala en Porter sits well away from the rest of the island. There is no regular public transport in or out, and the neighbouring coves and villages that make this part of Menorca so rewarding to explore are simply not reachable on foot. If you are staying at Cala en Porter, a hire car is not a nice extra. It is the difference between seeing one beautiful cove and discovering an extraordinary stretch of coastline that most visitors to Menorca never get close to.
Cova d'en Xoroi — and everything else
Most people who have heard of Cala en Porter have heard of it because of the Cova d'en Xoroi. The cave bar carved into the cliff face above the cove is one of those genuinely one-of-a-kind experiences — cocktails at sunset on a terrace jutting out over the sea, with the sound of the waves below you and the whole southern coastline stretching away to the horizon. It is worth the visit in its own right. But the area around Cala en Porter has a great deal more going for it than one famous cave, and a hire car is how you get to the rest of it.

What to explore from Cala en Porter by car
Cova d'en Xoroi
The famous cave bar on the cliff above the cove. Sunset cocktails on a terrace over the sea with views along the entire south coast. A genuinely unique experience that is worth every penny.
Cales Coves
Ten minutes east by car, one of the most remarkable prehistoric sites in Menorca. Burial caves carved into the cliffs above a quiet cove that feels completely untouched. Rarely crowded, always worth it.
Son Bou
Fifteen minutes west, the longest beach in Menorca. Nearly three kilometres of fine sand with shallow water that makes it one of the best family beaches on the island.
Alaior
Twenty minutes inland, the most characterful town in central Menorca. Famous for its artisan cheese and ice cream, with a relaxed local atmosphere that feels a long way from the beach resorts.
Sant Tomas
A quieter beach resort ten minutes west of Cala en Porter with natural dunes and access to some of the more sheltered coves on this stretch of the south coast. Noticeably calmer than Son Bou.
Mahon
Less than thirty minutes away, the capital of Menorca with the longest natural harbour in the Mediterranean. The covered market, the old town and the waterfront restaurants make it a great half-day out.
